IKEA’s Brooks Saddle – Innovative Chair Design

IKEA's Brooks Saddle - Innovative Chair Design

First time looking at this design, both amazed and curious of what makes the designer made this such chair. It is silly, but awesome. This captivating design is designed by IKEA Hackers that offers a new fresh look with an addition that could probably puzzle some. You can make this as a unique Christmas gift for your family. Actually, a saddle is not the most comfortable seating unit in the world. However, according to some people who experienced the chair, it is as smooth as it gets. In case you are wondering about the complexity of the building process, here is a statement from the project developers: “We replaced the nondescript seat of the Dalfred stool with a beautiful, broad, bouncy Brooks B135 leather bicycle saddle. This required grinding away some plastic at the top of the mounting post to expose metal of the right diameter to fix the saddle to. That’s pretty much it.” We really enjoyed this simple and out-of-the-box idea and are curious to see you reactions.

Olive Chair – Combining Between Upholstery and Fabric

Olive Chair - Combining Between Upholstery and Fabric

Good furniture for a good Christmas has just come. This is Olive Chair, envisioned by Israeli designers Adi Tasa and Yoav Avinoam. It is said that the chair was created using a molded polyester-based textile which was heated and given shape. According to the designers, Olive revives the traditional way of furniture making by re-examining the bonds between upholstery and the fabric around it. By doing so, the chair gets a three dimensional surface and the result is the creation of a new texture, both visible and physical. Asked to explain the process of producing this type of surface, Yoav replied: “The base fabric is molded and then steamed. After cooling down we insert pre-molded foam balls which are more stable and firm than batting. Then we apply glue from the upholstery world to seal the fabric with a base layer of cotton“. From where we’re standing, the chair looks quite comfortable. We are curious to see what you think about its design and production process. [Photos by Yigal Pardo]
